“The secret in education lies in respecting the student.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Hello, and welcome to my Electronic Portfolio! My name is Joy Postmus and I am from Roanoke, Virginia. Currently, I am an undergraduate at Hollins University where I major in English with a concentration in Multicultural Literature. I am also working towards obtaining my licensure in secondary education. I plan to graduate in the spring of 2023. During my free time I enjoy playing ukulele, writing poetry, and spending time with my loved ones.

I’ve always found comfort in words and the limitless opportunities that language has to offer. I knew that I wanted to teach English and help other young people find their own power through language. I am a life-long believer that literature pulls us all together and allows us to experience together what we could not on our own.

Our future generations need learning spaces that cultivate growth and personal interest. Every student should be recognized as a valuable asset to the classroom. Students deserve a space where their growth is priority and I value making this space accessible to all of my students. Please take a moment to review my Teaching Philosophy
